A great resource to use when brainstorming adjectives that describe the different animals in the story “Handa’s Surprise.” Children are very quick to learn the names of the fruit and animals in the story but often struggle with descriptive words. I created this resource to extend the children’s vocabulary while completing our “Handa’s Surprise” Unit.
There are two versions depending on the children’s ability. First, there is a set of boards with blank spaces for those children who find it easier to remember the adjectives. The other set of boards has the adjectives included for each animal so the children can match the card they pick.
HOW TO USE THIS RESOURCE:
First of all, brainstorm with the children adjectives for each animal from the story “Handa’s Surprise.” Use pages 23-26 to support you with examples of adjectives for each animal. You can print, laminate, and have this at hand in the classroom for the children to refer to.
Once the children are familiar with some adjectives for each animal, choose the set of boards you want to use depending on the children’s ability.
Print and laminate the boards.
Print, laminate, and cut the adjective flashcards on pages 16-22
Give each child a board. There are seven boards you could play with a group of 7 children or play in pairs, so 14 children in total.
Have the adjective flashcards spread and placed upside down. Pick a card (or you could have each child pick a card) read the adjective. Whoever has the board with the animal to which the adjective chosen corresponds places the adjective on their board.
The first child to place all the adjectives describing the animal on their board wins.
“The 12 Guards” is a little picture book about the Chinise Zodiac ideal to read to the children during the Chinese New Year Holiday. It is available as a pdf and in digital format. Lots of resources to go along with the story on my TES store.

This resource contains Songkran themed sentence flip cards which can also be used as write and wipe cards.
You can prepare the cards for us in a Write and Wipe centre by printing, laminating and cutting out each individual card.
Children can first practice reading the “Songkran” related sentences and then writing them by following the dots.

INSTRUCTIONS
Print the pages back to front, so the puzzle pieces are on the back of the picture; these have been labeled to distinguish them and in case they get misplaced.
Laminate and cut out the puzzle pieces, secure each puzzle with a paper clip, or keep them in a folder.
For the sentence puzzles, from page 14, you have the option to print and cut out the puzzle directly instead of printing the puzzle pieces on the back.
For the individual fruit and animal puzzles, there is only the option of printing the puzzle pieces on the back. These, too, have been labeled.

Sorting flashcards with the letters “t” and "p"
The flashcards should be printed, laminated, and cut out. These can then be used to group words based on their initial sound.
Memory game with “t” and "p"
Print, laminate, and cut the cards. Place the card image down. Children take turns selecting two cards and attempting to match the pictures. When they find a matching pair, they keep them. The child with the most cards wins.
I Spy “t” and “p” word games
Print, then laminate. Place the cards face down in a pile. The children take turns picking a card without showing their friends the picture. They say, “I spy with my little eye something beginning with…” and they say “t” or “p” depending on the picture card they picked. The children take turns spotting a “t” or “p”; i.e., “I spy with my little eye something beginning with “t,” and the other children ask, “Is it a tiger?” " Is it a tomato?” and so on until they get the word that was on the picture card the previous child picked.
6 “t” and “p” Bingo Boards
Each child is given a bingo board. The flashcards are placed down, and the children take turns picking a card. If it matches a picture on their board, they place a counter on the picture on their board. The first person to cover all the pictures on their board shouts out “BINGO” and is the winner.

The bingo boards and cards should be printed, laminated, and cut out. Give the children a bingo board and flip the cards over. They pick a card, and if it matches a picture on their board, they cover it up. The person who covers their boards first shouts “BINGO!” and wins.
Nursery Rhymes Memory Game
Print, laminate, and cut out each card for the Nursery Rhyme Matching Memory Game. Mix the cards and turn them over. The kids take turns picking two cards. If they match, they keep the cards; if the cards don’t match, they turn them back around. The player who has the most cards wins.

Oi Frog! Is a funny and colorful rhyming picture book and a great resource to use when teaching rhyming words to little children.
This resource includes follow up activities for Reception Class level based on this hilarious picture book. I used the book in my class for one week using all the different resources and the children LOVED IT!

6 bingo boards and cards. Print and laminate the boards. Back the rhyming cards with colored paper before cutting them out, cut and laminate. The children are each given a bingo board, the cards are placed upside down and the children take turns to pick a card. If they match a rhyming pair on their board, they place it on the matching picture. If it doesn’t match, they place it back down. The first child to find all the rhyming pairs shouts out BINGO! And is the winner.
THREADING CARDS
6 threading rhyming cards. Print, cut, laminate and punch a hole in the circles. The children are given a long piece of wool or thread and practice threading by joining the rhyming words.

FLASCHARDS
Matching rhyming cards and sentence flashcards for you to print, laminate and cut out. We used these daily to help the children learn the different rhymes. As they came into class, they picked a picture and looked for its rhyming sentence, we then went around calling out our rhyming sentence at the start of the lesson.

Handa’s Surprise is a lovely story ideal for learning about fruits, animals or a topic about Africa. We focused on learning the different adjectives to describe the fruits.
This resource includes follow-up activities for KG level based on this picture book. I used the book in my class for one week using all the different resources.
I started the first few sessions by reading the story and then using the flashcards to remind the children of the different fruits and adjectives describing them. A game they loved was “Musical Pairs,” where I gave each child one of the pictures, and when the music stopped, they would have to go around looking for the child holding the adjectives that described their fruit.
You can use these activities as a follow-up after reading the book “Handa’s Surprise” (book not included).

The children are given a long piece of wool or thread and practice threading by joining the animals to the fruit that they took in the story. Encourage the children to use the following langauge, “The giraffe took the spiky-leaved pineapple,” to help them recall the different adjectives used in the book.
FLASHCARDS
Fruit picture cards to match with the adjective cards. We used these daily to help the children learn the different fruits and adjectives. For example, as they came into class, they picked a picture of a fruit and looked for the adjectives that describe it; we then went around, saying i.e “I have the sweet-smelling guava”.
STORYBOARD
Children cut out the animals and fruit and place them in order on the storyboard. They then use the storyboard to help them retell the story in their own words.
SPINNERS
Cut out and laminate the spinners and arrows. Use a split pin to attach the arrow to the middle of the spinner. You can use the spinner as a whole class or with a small group of children. A great resource to help the children learn all the adjectives for the different fruits in the story “Handa’s Surprise.”
